How to Initialize, Firmware upgrade, RAID & Basic IP setup of H3C R4900 G6 Server

Initialization of Server:

Default IP Address of H3C server is 192.168.1.2/24, configure same subnet ip on laptop & connect with server through LAN RJ45 Cable as below.

LAN cable is connected to HDM port from backside of the server as below.

I have configured 192.168.1.100 in my laptop.

Put server ip in browser https://192.168.1.2 –> enter then click on advance than proceed to as mentioned in screenshot

Login with default username & password

Default username and password of H3C R4900 G6 server is admin/Password@_

Firmware Upgrade:

Before starting firmware upgrade, remember below points

In H3C three type of upgrade CPLD, BIOS & HDM. These all three should in sequence during upgrade like first CPLD–>BIOS –> Than HDM

CPLD & BIOS firmware is related to hardware part & HDM is for management like Graphic interface.

NOTE:

Verify From official website that which CPLD,BIOS & HDM version are compatible with each other, If its different than can create issue.

In my case CPLD & BIOS is already in latest version, I am going to upgrade the HDM part only. Let’s start

Current version

Click on three dots on right side –> then click on firmware & software as below screenshot

Click on update firmware & upload the file, I have downloaded already

The current HDM Version is 1.77 and upgrading to 1.83 ,

after uploading click next

When uploading 100% complete click next it will show  prompt for verify image just click ok

Server will automatically restart & just wait for few minutes & refresh again

Re login with same username & password

HDM Version has been upgraded

Important Point:

As per official document need to upgrade the HDM two times one for primary & another for secondary controller of server the same step need to perform as above.

Setup OOB/Mgmt IP and DNS

Click on configuration –> Network –> Dedicated port –> click on configure

Configure ip , gateway & enable DNS as per requirement then click on save

After changing ip you need to update your laptop ip address & re-login again.

NTP Server Setting:

Go to Configuration –> NTP

Set time zone & NTP server ip address as per customer requirements as I have put it default NTP server details

RAID Configuration:

Before RAID let me show you the storage details , in my case there are total 10 physical drives.

The first 8 is same & the last two is different , I will configure RAID-1 for OS part in last two drive & RAID-5 for services 8 drives.

There are two options to setup RAID from web HDM interface & also from BIOS,for the OS we will configure through BIOS & for services eight drive we will setup from HDM graphical interface. as in my case for OS RAID its not showing the option in GUI now let me configure from BIOS.

Before login to BIOS first enable below option from HDM GUI,

Go to system –>BIOS Setting –advance–>platform–>PCH–>Controller 1—>than enable RAID for SATA 1 as by default is AHCI. Don’t forget to click on save

After changing above setting restart

Power on than wait for few minutes

Now lets go to bios setting through remote consoles

For the first time click on start KVM it will download exe file for KVM then click on start H5 KVM, new prompt will be open

Press ESC/DEL from keyboard to enter bios setting, after press the ESC/DEL colour will change as below

Click on advance than Dynamic device configuration

Click on Intel VROC SATA Controller

Create RAID Volume

Select RAID1 then chose drive below as X, it will show you capacity after RAID , by default after RAID will show maximum 95% but you can change to 100%

Click on create volume

Click yes

Save & exit

Power off & power on again

RAID1 has been created for OS.

Now let me configure RAID 8 for Services Drive

System–>Storage–> Create a logical drive

Give name , Choose RAID level to 5 & select the drive which you want to add in RAID.

RAID 5 created successfully.

Syslog setup:

if there is syslog server in your environment for monitoring & troubleshooting and want to add H3C server with that syslog server

First enable syslog server setting

Go to O&M Diagnosis–>Alarm settings–>SyslogàConfigure

Enable & click Ok

There are multiple channel can connect multiple syslog server ,click on edit on right side

Configure the syslog server ip address & select the log type you want to monitor
